Welcome to my corner of the internet!
Hi, I’m Tolu and I am a Licensed mental health professional based in Houston, Texas. I see clients in person in Houston, Texas and offer Telehealth services throughout Texas and Washington. So why the name Re-member Counseling???
Meaning behind the name
We’ve been dis-membered
As the human species has evolved we have become less connected to ourselves, the earth, and the community of living beings. On a mark level we’ve been disconnected from our indigenous lands, culture, customs, due to systemic violence fueled by colonization and imperialism. As a result, colonization has birthed systems of oppression: white supremacy, racism, classism, racism, ableism, hetrosexism to name a few. I believe this disconnection has fueled the multiple polycrisis we find ourselves in today. It’s important to name that these systems are violent and traumatizing. As a result, trauma fragments us, disconnects us, isolates us, etc. The systems we live under enact this slow violence on us daily.
Let’s dare to Re-member
Re-member counseling is born from desire to re-connect what has been disconnected. Its a call to move toward re-collection, re-claiming, (re)memory… the author Aida Mariam Davis of Kindred Creation: Parables and Paradigms for Freedom uses the term re-member stating, “ Through the process of re-membering, we can recover and build rituals and ceremonies of togetherness in the present. We understand our world, and ourselves, through relationships, past and present.” Re-member counseling strives to slow down, ground, remember, rest, expand joy and resilience, and imagine a better future.
What clients do I serve?
Re-member counseling serves black, indigenous, people of color. In addition, we support 1st and 2nd generation immigrants. Serving these populations comes with a level of cultural competence that is imperative to doing good therapeutic work. I am mindful of the balance of coming from a collectivistic culture while balancing the tension of pursuing your individual desires without fully abandoning yourself and/or community. Sitting in the tension of desiring secure attachment without abandoning your authenticity.
My hope for this blog
This blog is a space where I can share my musings around somatic healing, embodiment, decoloniality, BIPOC , mental health, therapy, relational skills, interdependence, etc. Excited to begin this journey with who lands here!
